Christmas Morning

We had a great Christmas this year with all of my family here in MI. We had A LOT of presents to open, which no doubt took us a while. For the present opening intermission we had an omelet breakfast. I made little order forms and my mom, my sisters and I prepared the ingredients for the master omelet-maker (my dad) to make whip them up. They were awesome. That is one thing I can't do quite yet: make an omelet like my dad can. The egg-flipping is a little over my head.
I bought, as a joke, some HUGE footie pajamas for Adam. I didn't tell anyone that I did this, wanting to get a good laugh out of everyone. I did. Adam was so disgusted with the idea of XXL footie pajamas for men that he didn't even want to touch them. My brother, Nathan wanted to try them on. He did. Stripped right down to his boxers in front of us all to slip the fluffy footies on. It was a sight to behold. I kept my receipt and they are safely back on the rack at Target by now.

The girls open new pj's every Christmas Eve. Here they are!

Christmas Eve Snowman

We got a little carried away...

5 Years? No way!

Well, maybe it does seem like it has been 5 years after all. I do look at other people, though, who have been married for 5 years and think, "Wow, that's a long time." I know, not really, but I am young and I don't think I look old enough to be at the 5 year mark. But here we are! December 20th, 2008, 5 years married and pushing on!

We have been through a lot in the last 5 years:
  • Rented our first apartment in Springville, UT while we finished up at BYU. We also bought our first car, a 1990 Audi Quattro which drained $2000 in repairs out of us. (Never trust a used car lot salesmen and listen to your mechanic, no matter how much you want the car.)
  • Had our first baby on 2.9.05, Adalin Michele, weighing 9 lbs. 9 oz. Sweetest little thing you could imagine.
  • Endured the grueling process of medical school applications and interviews. Yuck. Moved to MO for med-school.
  • Bought our first house!
  • Had baby #2 on 3.28.07, adorable Kira Elizabeth, weighing in at 8 lbs. 11 oz (2 weeks early.)
  • Made it through the first years of medical school (still don't know how we did) and moved back to my home state for the last 2 years, rotations at Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc, MI.

We celebrated in Frankenmuth, MI while my wonderful mom babysat the kids! We stopped off at the Birch Run outlets, spent more money than we should have, went out to dinner, drove around to see the thousands of Christmas lights that the town displays, tried to walk to some shops but ran back to the car due to the must-have-been negative temperatures, went to our hotel and watched some movies on HBO. It was a great time!

Kira Franson, OB/GYN

Adam had his OB/GYN rotation this last month and was on call once or twice a week for 4 weeks. That means that he was at the hospital at 7am and stayed there until 8-9 am the next morning. We went to see him when he was on call, brought him dinner to save him from the cafeteria food (that he actually doesn't seem to mind too much) and so the girls can see their dad for a few minutes before going to bed. This particular night, Adam came out to greet us, fresh out of the operating room (c-section), with his blue Pillsbury dough boy hat and matching booties on. What a sight! Kira claimed the hat... people were cracking up in the halls at her. I was glad I had my camera with me. True Kodak moment right there.

Gingerbread House

We made a gingerbread house a few weeks ago for a family home evening. I bought a kit from Michaels that had everything included, gingerbread (pre-baked), frosting, candy. Nice. Less work for me! It was fun and the girlies loved decorating it (and eating the frosting and candy, of course.)

"Two Peas in a Pod"

I haven't truly comprehended the phrase before now. Adalin and Kira are just that though! They crack me up on a daily basis. If Adalin is reading a book, Kira gets one and does the same. If Adalin squawks with excitement, Kira lets out a loud shriek of her own. If Adalin goes potty, Kira (tries to) go potty. It is really cute. They are really starting to play together more and act like the best friends that they are. Hopefully they will always share the sisterly love that they do now.

Of course, there is the hair-pulling, hitting and kicking that inevitably goes on around here. You know, we deal with it (better sometimes than others.) They are a hoot.

My Birthday 2008

This was really one of the best birthdays that I have ever had. Having family and friends over all day really made it extra special. My whole family was already at my house for Thanksgiving the day before, so they were here. The Langdorfs from Lexington, KY visited in the AM. Our good friends, the Flammers, came up from OH and stayed the weekend with us. My next door neighbor, Kelli, stopped by with her cute daughter and a gift (a waffle iron, hooray!) My mom made me the fabulous Lemon Butter Pound cake in the new bundt cake pan that she and my dad got me for my special day. I also finally own a gravy boat thanks to Mom and Dad, thanks! I got to see my father and mother-in-law the weekend before too!

One of the best gifts that I got that day was that the very nice residents at the hospital let Adam come home after working for only 2 hours! I was still lying in bed, snuggling with Adalin when I heard the garage door open... I was so happy! Since it was a holiday weekend I thought this may be a possibility that they wouldn't make him work, but it was just so nice to have Adam around the whole day. Since we had so many people for Thanksgiving the day before, our house was a complete disaster, and we had company coming over, so Adam, as tired as he was from getting up at 5:15am, got the vacuum out and cleaned his heart out for me so I wouldn't have to. Ah... I could always use a break from that.

The gifts that Adam picked out for me were so sweet too. I have to say that he let everyone see a little bit of his romantic side, which is always a treat. He demanded that I open one of the two that morning, shortly after he came home from "work." The bookstore at the hospital was having a sale a few weeks ago so he picked up Pride and Prejudice for me, the BBC/A&E version, complete with the Making of Pride and Prejudice book. OK, so we all know that men are usually not too fond of watching young women sit around all day, embroidering cushions and waiting for the next ball to be announced. Well, I LOVE this movie in all its glory and enjoy watching it when I sew or do crafts. I always think that Adam kind of rolls his eyes when he comes downstairs to my craft room and sees me watching this movie (my sister, Lauren's copy that I have been borrowing for months) and doing my latest sewing project. He bought me my own copy though and I just thought that it was so cute and thoughtful! He is my Mr. Darcy. :)

As for the second gift he got for me, this tops the first. You are probably thinking, "How could anything be better that the first?" Well, this one goes back a few months to when my next door neighbor, Kelli, who is a jeweler, and I started talking about rings. I told her of my sad, sad story of when I lost my original wedding rings **sniff sniff** and she told me she would look out for something like it. A few weeks later she brought me a ring that was similar to my original, and being the good friend that she is, said that she would only ask of me what it cost her, which is 1/7 of the price of my original. I wore it for a few days, really wanted to buy it from her and talked it over with Adam. Being the practical guy that he is, he told me he knows I want a real replacement for the ring I lost, but now probably isn't the best time, being a few months before Christmas and only a year and a half before graduation (which means real income). I agreed, gave the ring back to Kelli for the other "very interested" buyer to claim. I was perfectly fine with wearing my Walmart replacement ring for 1 1/2 years longer.

I sit down Friday evening to open the second of Adam's gifts, wrapped in a small clothes box to find three things: a patriotic pad of paper with a matching men (which was fetched out of our junk cupboard), a pair of Kira's sunglasses and a black, velvet ring box, which when opened revealed the same ring that I sadly parted with weeks earlier. Tricked! All along he wanted to save the ring for my birthday! How sweet is that?!? I didn't even suspect a thing. Good work, Ad (and Kelli).

It was my friend, DeAnne's birthday a week earlier, so we sang to her too!

Snow Day

School was canceled this morning (not that that really affected us) because we got DUMPED on last night. There was a lot of shoveling to do and the girls wanted so badly to go out and make a snowman. They loved it and actually stayed dry! I am definitely considering my shovelling job this morning my workout for the day... a 30 ft. long driveway times 6 inches of snow equals about 2,000 cubic feet of snow shoveled. Wahoo! This is the MI I remember! Lots of snow!

Our Christmas '08 Picture

Thanksgiving '08

Our Thanksgiving was wonderful! My entire family and our friend, Suzy came to our house for the feast and the food was all fantastic! We had a little turkey trouble b/c the meat thermometer must have been in a hollow cavity b/c it was not registering 170 degrees even after 7 hours... but the turkey ended up being just perfect and juicy. My mom and I made a lot of stuff the day before to prevent a complete stress-overload Thanksgiving day. I made 3 pies (triple chocolate pecan, blueberry and apple crumble), all of which turned out wonderfully. I also made a wonderful Raspberry Pretzel Salad, mashed potatoes and a corn souffle. I will post recipes for most of those dishes on my cooking blog within a few days.
